Center news

2007 was a year of success.
Whether it’s slapping roasted pig with a side o’ slaw on a paper plate, meeting with city officials to plan for land usage, or selling cookies dressed up as a vampire, the activities of the Palouse Community Center board members and friends this past year have been anything but boring.

The Palouse Community Center began the year with an empty lot, high hopes, and the beginning of a building fund sitting in an account in the local bank. In 2007 they accomplished more than expected to bring the much needed center to fruition.

A building committee formed in May to begin formatting plans for a new building, and had the good fortune of procuring architect Sam Gregg, who offered to create plans and work on the center pro-bono. Two plans were created after extensive research by the PCC board, and were posted in Palouse for the community members to view before a decision was made to move forward.

Soon after making the decision on the building, and the city agreeing to extend a lease of land for the new community center, the board members began to think of ways to fund the building project.

After selling the old community center, holding several fundraising events, receiving donations from community members, and receiving earnings from the Needful Things thrift shop and online bookstore, over $100,000 was raised.

In 2008, the focus for the PCC board will primarily be on fundraising. While the past year’s fundraising efforts were a success, it is short of the building goal by $250,000. While sounding like a lot of money, the board is convinced that the project will be a success.

In order to raise the funds, the board will research grants through Whitman County, private foundations and utilities. Board members are hoping to work with local area business for their support. Community members will be able to make donations, and a fundraising opportunity in 2008 will allow you to leave your name on the center for your grandchildren, or their grandchildren, to see.

There will also be several fundraising events in 2008 for the community center. On March 1 the Lions Club of Palouse hosted BINGO night at the Palouse Arts Council Building. Boy Scout Troop 455 hosted a spaghetti dinner prior to playing BINGO.

PCC board members are Scott Beeson, Crystal Bailey, Marie Dymkoski, Doreen Hanson, Paula Echanove, Bev Pearce, Corey Laughary, Linda Snook, and Eric Parker.
